Screening for impact: 5 dimensions of impact of the IMP

Course modules

The course is structured around 3 chapters and 9 lessons on how to screen the ESG and impact performance or potential of organisations.

ESG/impact screening is very in vogue – little do we know though as to why it should be an economic imperative before we make any investment decisions. This primer explores how core impact of a business model and ESG factors drive value creation and long-term profitability of an organisation. We will look at the link between the two, the types of screening that are commonly used (exclusionary and positive screening, materiality assessment) as well as the limits and the risk one should be aware of undertaking this exercise.

The Impact Management Project (IMP) is an international initiative to build global consensus on measuring, assessing and reporting impacts. The IMP put forward 5 dimensions of impact. In this Chapter you will learn how to perform a screening of an investment opportunity against the 5 dimensions of impact and evaluate whether it fits within a funds' investment mandate. Using a case study, we will put theory into practice and discuss the advantages and drawbacks of this method.

This chapter explores how to measure and manage ESG and impact factors to pick assets and drive value throughout the holding period.  We will focus on how to use impact due diligence insights to feed into the 100 day plan post investment, and future value creation strategy in collaboration with management teams.
