Measure impact using Social Value and SROI

Course modules

The course starts with the foundations of impact measurement and gradually progresses to more advanced practices like outcome valuation and materiality assessments.

1. Impact as centre stage

In this Chapter, you will learn to recognise and convincingly communicate how measuring and managing impacts can generate benefits for your work. You will understand what social impact is and the ways to assess it based on the five dimensions of impact and the eight Principles of Social Value. Moreover, we will learn to recognise the different impact management approaches, their advantages, limits and relationships.

2. Create a compelling impact strategy

By the end of the second chapter you will be able to analyse a social or environmental problem by conducting root-cause analysis and define strong and compelling impact goals for an organisation. You will also learn how to create a powerful Theory of Change, or in other words a plan for achieving your impact goals.

3. Define relevant outcomes

In Chapter 3, you will learn to identify stakeholders and meaningfully segment them as well as to define relevant outputs and outcomes (effects or changes) to report and improve. This will allow you to apply the materiality test to prioritize what really matters.

4. Identify outcome indicators

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to find appropriate indicators to measure outcomes and define thresholds. We will learn to set thresholds to identify expected amounts of change and identify the duration of these changes and when we are accountable for them. Lastly, you will be capable to measure change against a baseline and create a questionnaire to capture and analyse data for reporting and improvements.

5. Value outcomes

In this chapter, you will learn to attribute value to stakeholder changes in expected outcomes and report and identify improvements through valuation techniques, including the social value and SROI calculation. By the end of the Chapter, you will be able to successfully plan to achieve positive impacts that are valuable to society and the planet.

6. Measure net impacts

By the end of Chapter 6, you will be able to identify and assess the counterfactual or ‘what could have happened anyway’ - otherwise known as deadweight as well as the contribution/attribution factor of others which affects your impact. You will also learn to determine the net impact of your contribution and evaluate it to properly report and identify improvements.

7. Manage to maximise

This last chapter is all about impact management: you will learn to transparently report impact results to external stakeholders and leverage your results to support strategic and operational decision-making. Moreover, you will be able to recognise the importance of embedding impact management and identify the key requirements to creating a culture of impact management in an organisation.

The self-paced course allowed me to be flexible about when I can do the modules and chapters, but more cohort opportunities would have been great since I would have loved to follow the course live.
