Social businesses aim to contribute to solving sustainability challenges whilst achieving positive financial results. This reality requires investors to be capable of calculating a fair valuation, taking both financial cash flows and impact value creation into account.
In this practical course, you will refresh the key valuation methods and approaches, understand the role of investors’ cost of capital, the investment horizon and position on the impact finance spectrum as well as the implications of financing different impact business models. The course provides a step-by-step, easy-to-follow approach to learning an essential investment skill.
What You'll Learn
Course Modules
The first session will set the scene, cover key terms and introduce the entrepreneur’s and investor’s perspective on the valuation process. We will discover what it means to fairly value an impact venture and discuss progressive practices.
In the second session, we will untangle the relationship between financial and impact performance and delve into impact trade-offs and alignment in the business model of impact ventures.
In the final session, we will discuss the link between P&L, balance sheet and valuation and dive into a role play to practise your learnings based on a case study. We will wrap up with a future outlook on upcoming methodologies, influencing the space in the years ahead.

Our Expert Trainers
The training is developed with the European Center for Social Finance, a boutique expert on financing social services and social innovation.
Dr. Wolfgang Spiess-Knafl works on the development of the social finance market in Europe since 2016. He has advised and trained dozens of investors and entrepreneurs on deal-making and valuation. He previously worked at Morgan Stanley and completed his doctoral studies with a focus on social finance.
